Driving is a serious responsibility and there are extensive
Virginia state requirements to keep our teenagers safe. It is
important to follow these state-enforced guidelines. These are
some of the requirements to be aware of as you begin your
Virginia Teen Driver Education.
Virginia State Driver Education Course Requirements:
• Virginia Driver Education course
• Documentation to prove your eligibility
• Vision screening and two-part permit test at the DMV
• Parent or Guardian Consent
A Virginia Teen Driver’s Education course:
The fist requirement is online teen driver education
course. Anyone under 19 years of age must take a state-approved
Virginia driver education program with 36 classroom
periods and 14 in-car instruction periods. If you are
home-schooled, you can take Virginia Teen Driver’s Ed

for your Virginia Learner’s Permit.
A vision screening and a two-part Virginia permit test:
We will prepare you pass your Virginia permit test on your first

Documentation that proves your eligibility:
You need to be at least 15 ˝ years old before you can apply for
a Virginia learner’s permit. You will also be asked to
show proof of legal presence (either a U.S. citizen or legally
authorized to be in the United States) and proof of Virginia
residency. You will also need to have a document showing your
social security number.
Parent or guardian consent:
Your parent or guardian is a big part of the Virginia Driver
Education process. They need to agree that you have the
skills and maturity to become a driver. Parents are encouraged
to take an active role during the first few years of driving.
